It was just over a year ago that the country shut down for “2 weeks to flatten the curve”. When 2 weeks turned into several months in most states throughout the country, many people began struggling in various areas of their lives. We all know of the financial struggles many have endured due to the shutting down of our economy, but there are private struggles that most people won’t talk about. Becoming a prisoner in our homes has taken a severe toll on our collective psyche. Our homes should be a respite for us. It is supposed to be a place we go to for relaxation and time away from work, but what happens when you now work from home? And your children and spouse are home too? And there’s nowhere to escape? Some people seek to escape with alcohol and other substances. And now, more than a year later, with many shutdowns still in place, what may have started as a brief effort to escape, may have become a daily habit that is no longer an escape at all, but has created its own set of problems. If you’re ready to make a change and ditch the alcohol or drug habit, or you just want to reduce it back to pre-COVID levels, I have good news. You can! And you don’t need to go to a 12 step meeting, group therapy, or a treatment center to do it. You can simply make the decision to stop or cut back, and follow through on that decision.
